Daniel L. Fortes, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He attended Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro School of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1999. From Brazil, he came to the United States to complete his General Surgery residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio followed by a Cardiothoracic Surgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Fortes joined Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons in January 2014 after having over 4 years of experience at Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia, the largest thoracic surgery program in the metro DC region.

He is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery with special training in minimally invasive surgery. His practice focuses in thoracic oncology (cancers of the chest, including lungs, esophagus and mediastinal) and esophageal diseases, such as dismotility disorders, hiatal hernias and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). He is fellowship trained in all aspects of minimally invasive thoracic surgery including, laparoscopic, thoracoscopic (VATS – vídeo-assisted thoracic surgery) and robotic surgery.

Dr. Fortes is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Thoracic Surgical Club, J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society, and the Travis County Medical Society. In addition, he has published numerous research articles and book chapters in his specialty and is a frequent speaker on all aspects of general thoracic surgery.
